Royal Copenhagen Christmas Plate 2007 - Christmas in Nyhavn
Nyhavn -- otherwise known as the New Harbour Channel -- was inaugurated by King Christian V in 1670 and was originally built as a quarter for people who earned their living from the sea. Owing to Nyhavn's close proximity to the Royal Danish Theatre, however, it soon became very popular with both the respectable citizens of Copenhagen and the artists of the day.
The 2007 Christmas Plate invites us into a snow-covered Nyhavn, where the channel is frozen around three lonely boats. Nine houses on the sunny side of the channel illustrate the varied architecture of the quarter. The third house from the right was home to Hans Christian Andersen on a number of occassions.
No other Christmas plate collection in the world can rival the long and wonderful history of Danish Christmas plates. The 2007 Royal Copenhagen Christmas Plate is the 100th edition in the annual series which began in 1908. It is only fitting that this important edition has one of the most famous quarters of Copenhagen as its motif.
