The "French horn player" is part of the "Monkey Band" consisting of 21 monkey musicians, a series of collectible figures by Johann Joachim Kaendler. Kaendler, Meissen's first model master and a master of his craft, created this whimsical orchestra in 1753: monkeys disguised as humans - delicate, playful and hand-painted figures for festive table decorations. In keeping with the fashion of the time, Kaendler held up an ironic and humorous mirror to courtly society. Artfully assembled by hand, hand-painted with great variety and detail, each figurine of the "Monkey Chapel" bears witness to Kaendler's unique skills in handicrafts. For lovers of collectible figures, his monkeys are lovable gems.
